Situated at an altitude of approximately 16,200 feet, the Bali Pass trek is one of the most thrilling treks where you will get to experience breathtaking views of the prominent mountain peaks such as Bandarpoonch, Kalanag, Swargarohini, and others.

Bali Pass trek starts from Sankri village in Uttarakhand and ends at Janki Chatti near Yamunotri Dham. This trek takes you through the beautiful villages of Har Ki Dun valley such as Osla, Gangaad, and Taluka, and then we enter into the Govind National Park. The total distance of Bali Pass trek is approximately 65 kms. The best time to do Bali Pass trek is from May to June and from September to October. One needs to be extremely fit-physically and mentally in order to do this trek. Bali Pass trek is only meant for experienced trekkers and not for beginners.

Day 1 of the Bali Pass trek begins with a scenic drive from Dehradun passing alongside Tons River and the quaint villages like Damta, Purola, Mori, Netwar, etc. After 8-9 hours long drive, we reach the base village of Sankri. Post dinner, we rest in homestays and prepare ourselves for the much-awaited trek on Day 2.

On day 2, we start the journey from Sankri to Seema village, which is a tiny settlement alongside Supin River. This village is exactly opposite to Osla. After starting the trek, we take a right turn towards Bali Pass and leave behind Osla on the left. After trekking for approximately 5-6 hours, we reach the picturesque Seema village. The day ends after we set up our camp or stay in a local household enjoying the Garhwali culture.

Day 3 of this trek is equally exciting and adventurous. We will be passing through beautiful Deodar and Pine trees and the majestic Swargarohini massif will accompany us throughout the trek. Leaving the last of human settlements behind, we continue along the true left of the valley along the Supin River. A couple of hours trek will take us to a beautiful meadow which is called Devsu Thatch. You can see a 360-degree panoramic view of Swargarohini mountain ranges from this meadow. After a trek of 5-6 hours, we set up our camp at a close proximity to the waterfall. Hence, the campsite is known as waterfall camp.

After breakfast on day 4, we start the trek from waterfall campsite towards Ruinsara Tal. Situated at an altitude of approximately 11,500 feet, Ruinsara Tal is one of the most scenic lakes in the Garhwal Himalayas. This lake is a glacial lake surrounded by the mighty peaks like Swargarohini, Black Peak, and others. The meadows around Ruinsara lake are unexplored and you can experience peacefulness alongside the lake. The trek towards Ruinsara Tal is a very short trek of approximately 2-3 hours. We camp overnight near the lake.

Day 5 is acclimatization day at the Ruinsara campsite. We can either rest or explore the campsite or go on a trek to Thanga. This trek is not more than 3 km in which the total altitude gain is from 11,500 feet to 13,100 feet.

After a sumptuous breakfast, we begin day 6 of Bali Pass trek from Ruinsara campsite towards Bali Pass base camp or Odara campsite. The total trek distance today is approximately 7-8 km which will take 6-7 hours to reach the campsite. You get to see the first patches of snow and as you enter the snow line, there is an increase in the steepness of the climb. You might have to use gaiters or crampons on the trail today depending on the intensity of snow. During the trek, you will witness stunning views of Kyarkoti valley and Swargarohini peak. The temperature during the night might go down to sub-zero degrees. We setup our camp at Odara at an altitude close to 15,000 feet.

Here comes the day we all were looking forward to. It’s the summit day! The seventh day of our trek begins very early as we will be attempting the summit on or before 8 a.m. The total time to reach the summit of Bali Pass is approximately one to one and a half hours. Once we reach the summit, we will get to see breathtaking views of the Yamunotri and Ruinsara Tal. The summit trek is relatively steep and a local guide is required to take you to the highest point of this trek. After enjoying the summit views, we start descending towards lower Dhamni campsite. The descend is tricky as there might be snow on the trail. It will take approximately 1-2 hours to reach the lower Dhamni campsite. Depending on the weather conditions, we can also set up the camp at Yamunotri side of Bali Col.

Day 8 of Bali Pass trek takes you through verdant landscapes including forests and villages to reach the holy pilgrimage of Yamunotri Dham. After trekking for close to 6-7 hours, we will reach Janki Chatti, the starting point of the Yamunotri trek. We stay in a guest house for the night.

As we begin our return journey towards Dehradun on Day 9, we bid adieu to the beautiful landscapes of Uttarakhand and reach Dehradun till late evening. Take back unforgettable memories from the trek and cherish them for the lifetime.
