There are many beautiful treks in Uttarakhand that offer scenic landscapes, rich flora, and diverse wildlife. Every year, thousands of trekkers visit this Himalayan state to explore it's natural beauty and peaceful mountain trails. Some of the most popular treks here include Kedarkantha, Brahmatal, Valley of Flowers, Har Ki Dun, and Deoriatal-Chandrashila.
But among all of these, the Dayara Bugyal Trek is one trek I never get tired of doing.
I’ve done this trek multiple times, and every time it feels like a new experience. The landscapes keep changing with the seasons, but the feeling you get while walking through these mountains remains the same - calm, peaceful, and deeply refreshing.
The journey usually begins from Delhi to Dehradun. After a relaxed overnight stay in Dehradun, the real transition starts with a long but beautiful drive towards Raithal village in the Uttarkashi district. As you pass through Mussoorie, Chamba, and Uttarkashi, the scenery slowly changes - crowded streets give way to winding mountain roads, and the noise of the city is replaced by the sound of rivers and fresh mountain air. By the time you reach Raithal, you already feel rejuvenated. Raithal itself is a quiet and charming village. Staying in a homestay here adds a very personal touch to the experience. The warmth of the locals, simple home-cooked food, and the clear night sky make it a perfect start before heading into the mountains.
The next morning, the trek begins gently. The initial stretch towards upper Raithal is short, but it opens up to stunning views of peaks like Draupadi Ka Danda and surrounding ranges. As you continue further, the trail slowly enters dense forests filled with Rhododendron, Pine, and Deodar trees. This part of the trek is something I always enjoy - walking through shaded trails, hearing birds around you, and occasionally stopping just to take it all in.
As the forest clears, you reach Gui, a beautiful campsite that feels completely cut off from the outside world. Evenings here are peaceful, with cold mountain air, simple food, and conversations under a sky full of stars. It’s one of those places where you naturally slow down.
The next stretch of the trek is what truly makes Dayara Bugyal special. As you move ahead from Gui, the forest gradually opens up, and suddenly you find yourself standing in vast, endless meadows. The first view of Dayara Bugyal is something I can never forget, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.
These meadows stretch as far as your eyes can see. In summer, they are lush green and filled with wildflowers, while in winter, they turn into a white blanket of snow. Walking here feels effortless and peaceful at the same time.
From the top, the views are absolutely breathtaking. Peaks like Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, Gangotri Peak, and Draupadi Ka Danda stand tall in the distance. There’s a quiet moment when you just sit there, take in the views, and feel completely present. That’s the moment that stays with me every time.
One of my favorite detours during the trek is towards Barnala Tal. Surrounded by Oak trees and set against a backdrop of mountains, this lake has a calmness that’s hard to describe. It’s the kind of place where you can sit for hours without realizing how time passes.
After spending time in the meadows, heading back to Gui feels different. The same trail now feels more familiar, and there’s a quiet satisfaction of having experienced something special. The night at the campsite after visiting Dayara Bugyal is always more relaxed, with everyone sharing stories and moments from the day.
The descend back to Raithal is equally enjoyable. Walking down through the forests, you notice things you might have missed earlier - the small details, the sounds, the changing light. Reaching the village again brings a mix of comfort and a slightly sad feeling that the journey is coming to an end.
On the way back to Dehradun, I always try to stop at Gangnani. After days of trekking, dipping your feet in the natural hot water springs feels incredibly relaxing. It’s a simple experience, but one that completes the journey perfectly.
What makes the Dayara Bugyal trek truly special is how balanced it is. It’s not too difficult, which makes it perfect for beginners, but at the same time, it offers everything you would expect from a Himalayan trek - forests, meadows, mountain views, and a sense of peace that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Every time I finish this trek, I come back feeling energized, both physically and mentally. It’s not just about reaching the top or completing the trek. It’s about the entire journey - the people you meet, the conversations you have, and the moments you experience along the way.
If you’re planning your first trek or simply looking for a peaceful escape in the Himalayas, the Dayara Bugyal trek is something I would strongly recommend. And if you ask me - I know I’ll keep going back here again and again.
