Overview

The Chavand fort (also known as Prasannagad), which rises 1036 meters (3,399 feet) above sea level, is located 30 km from Narayangaon in Junnar Taluka of Pune district in Maharashtra. The fort was looted and destroyed by the British upon siege. During the reign of the Satavahan, the Naneghat, also known as Nanacha Angtha (Nana’s Thumb) was one of the trade routes. It connected the Konkan coast communities with Deccan high plateau through Junnar. Literally, the name ‘Nane’ means “coin” and ‘Ghat’ means “pass”. The name Naneghat is given because this path was used as a tollbooth to collect toll from traders crossing the hills during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
