Overview

Ghangad Fort is a historic hill Fort located in the Pune District of Maharashtra, nestled in the scenic Sahyadri mountain range. Situated at an altitude of around 3,000 feet, the Fort lies near the popular Tamhini Ghat and is part of the Lonavala-Khandala trekking and heritage circuit. Ghangad Fort is the extension of the Sudhagad Fort range. It is surrounded by lush greenery, valleys, and offers splendid views of nearby forts like Tailbaila, Sudhagad, and the Mulshi Dam backwaters.

Historically, Ghangad Fort was used as a watchtower and prison during the Maratha Empire due to its strategic location overseeing trade routes between Pune and the Konkan region. Though not as large or elaborate as other forts in the region, it carries significant value for its historical purpose and panoramic views. The trek to the top is short but moderately challenging, making it an ideal one-day adventure for beginners as well as experienced trekkers. The path includes rock patches, narrow stairways, and a steel ladder for the final ascent.

Highlights
What makes this tour special
  • The Triangular Boulder (‘Photo Spot’ Cave): Along the plateau near the Fort, you’ll encounter a massive tilted boulder that forms a natural cave-like shelter - a great spot for photos and for taking rest.
  • Dense Evergreen Forest Section: The first stretch of the trek winds through lush, shaded forest. This forested section provides a refreshing start, especially during summer months.
  • Steel Ladder & Steep Rock Patch: The final climb involves a steep rock face. A steel ladder installed recently makes this section more accessible - even for beginners. The second challenging patch has a fixed rope for support.
  • Panoramic Summit Views: Once you reach the top of the Fort, you will enjoy 360° vistas of Mulshi Dam backwaters, Sudhagad, Korigad, Sarasgad, Tail Baila, and the surrounding valleys and ghat roads.
