Standing at an elevation of 1,646 metres (5,400 ft) above sea level, Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra and is fondly known as the "Everest of Maharashtra." Located in the Ahmednagar district, the peak lies within the beautiful Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, offering panoramic views of the Sahyadri mountain ranges, including Alang, Madan, Kulang, Ratangad, and Bhandardara backwaters.
The peak is named after Kalsu, a local woman who, according to folklore, disappeared on the mountain while escaping hardship. A small temple dedicated to Goddess Kalsubai stands at the summit and is visited by thousands of devotees and trekkers throughout the year.
The trek is moderately challenging and is perfect for adventure enthusiasts looking to experience the thrill of climbing Maharashtra's highest peak. The route includes well-defined trails, rocky patches, and a series of iron ladders that make the ascent both exciting and accessible.
