Shivneri Fort, located near Junnar in the Pune District of Maharashtra, is a site of great historical and cultural importance. The Fort is famously known as the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Situated atop a hill and surrounded by steep slopes, this Fort served as a secure military outpost and a well-planned settlement during the Maratha era. The Fort’s strong defenses, water reservoirs, temples, and ancient structures reflect it's strategic and architectural significance. Recently, Shivneri Fort has been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site by the Maharashtra State Government in July 2025.
A trek to Shivneri is moderate and accessible, with well-paved steps and pathways leading to the top, making it popular among history lovers and beginner trekkers. The panoramic views of the surrounding hills, the statue of young Shivaji with his mother Jijabai, and points of interest like Badami Talav, Ambarkhana, and ancient gates add to it's charm. Today, Shivneri Fort stands not just as a monument of Maratha pride but also as a destination that beautifully combines history, architecture, and natural beauty.
