Overview

The Rajgad to Torna Trek is one of the most iconic ridge treks in the Sahyadri Mountain Range of Maharashtra. This historical traverse links two majestic forts — Rajgad, the capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and Torna, the first fort he captured at the young age of 16.

With its rich history, panoramic views, thrilling ridge walks, and remote trails through mountain passes and dense forests, this trek is a must-do for seasoned hikers and history lovers alike.

History of Rajgad Fort

The fort has stood witness to many significant historic events including the birth of Chhatrapati Shivaji’s son “Rajaram Chhatrapati”, the death of Shivaji Maharaj's Queen Saibai, the return of Shivaji Maharaj from Agra, the burial of Afzal Khan’s head in the Mahadarwaja walls of Balle Killa, the strict words of Sonopant Dabir to Shivaji Maharaj.

Rajgad Fort was also one of the 17 forts that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj kept when he signed the Treaty of Purandar in 1665, with the Mughal General Jai Singh I, leader of the Mughal forces. Under this treaty, 23 forts were handed over to the Mughals.

History of Torna Fort

Torna Fort, also known as Prachandagad, is a historically significant fort in Maharashtra as it was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1646 at the young age of 16, marking the beginning of the Maratha Empire. Originally believed to be built in the 13th century, it passed through the hands of various dynasties including the Bahmani and Adil Shahi rulers. Shivaji Maharaj renamed it Prachandagad due to its massive structure and strategic importance. Over time, the fort was contested by the Mughals and later reclaimed by the Marathas. Key highlights include Zunzar Machi, ancient temples, bastions, and natural water cisterns — all offering a glimpse into its rich military and cultural heritage.

🏞️ What is Madhe Ghat?

Madhe Ghat is a scenic mountain pass and valley nestled in the Western Ghats (Sahyadri range), near Torna Fort, and en route to Raigad. Surrounded by dense forests, rolling hills, and misty plateaus, it is a popular destination for monsoon drives, nature lovers, and trekkers. The ghat offers panoramic views of valleys, rivers, and distant forts like Rajgad and Raigad on clear days.

💧 Madhe Ghat Waterfall

The star attraction at Madhe Ghat is the Madhe Ghat Waterfall, a massive 200+ feet cascade that flows powerfully during the monsoon season. Surrounded by lush greenery and cliffs, the waterfall plunges into a rocky gorge and creates a majestic scene — ideal for photography, nature exploration, and peaceful getaways. A short trek or walk leads you close to the waterfall, and it’s a popular stop during treks from Torna or to Raigad.

⚠️ Safety Note: During monsoon, the rocks can be extremely slippery. Avoid going too close to the edge.

🕰️ Historical Significance

Madhe Ghat is historically important — it was the route used to carry the mortal remains of Tanaji Malusare, the brave warrior of Shivaji Maharaj, from Sinhagad to his native village Umrathe near Poladpur. A memorial of Tanaji Malusare is located at the ghat, adding historical depth to its natural beauty.
