Rajgad Fort is one of Maharashtra’s most iconic historical forts and a popular trekking destination near Pune. Located in the Sahyadri mountain range, it offers a perfect blend of history, adventure, and natural beauty. Once the capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the fort still preserves ancient ruins, palaces, temples, and water cisterns. With breathtaking valley views and spectacular sunsets, the Rajgad fort trek is an ideal getaway for adventure seekers and history enthusiasts.
Rajgad Fort has witnessed several important events in the history of the Maratha Empire. Originally known as Murumbdev Fort, it was developed and strengthened under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and served as the Maratha capital for nearly 26 years before the capital shifted to Raigad. The fort holds several historical associations with Shivaji Maharaj and his family. It was the birthplace of his son, Rajaram Maharaj, and the place where his queen Saibai passed away. It also witnessed Shivaji Maharaj's return from Agra, an important chapter in Maratha history.
Another significant historical association is the burial of Afzal Khan's head near the Mahadarwaja of Balekilla. The fort also has connections with Sonopant Dabir, one of Shivaji Maharaj's trusted advisors. Rajgad Fort played an important role during the Treaty of Purandar, signed in 1665 between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Mughal general Mirza Raja Jai Singh I. Under the treaty, Shivaji Maharaj agreed to surrender 23 forts to the Mughals while retaining control of 12 forts including Rajgad.
Today, the fort stands as a reminder of courage, strategic vision, and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Exploring it's historic structures and trails offers visitors a glimpse into Maharashtra's rich Maratha heritage.
