Situated at an altitude of about 2,700 feet in the Sahyadri range, Raigad Fort is one of Maharashtra’s most iconic hill Forts and a symbol of Maratha pride. Originally known as Rairi, it was seized, rebuilt, and fortified by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1674, becoming the capital of the Maratha Empire. The Fort is famed as the coronation site of Shivaji Maharaj and houses historical landmarks such as the Raj Bhavan (King’s palace), Nagarkhana Darwaja, Jagadishwar Temple, and the Samadhi of Shivaji Maharaj.
Surrounded by steep cliffs on all sides, Raigad is considered almost impregnable, with only one main pathway – the Maha Darwaja - leading to the top. The trekkers can either trek up approximately 1,730 stone steps or take the ropeway for a panoramic ascent. The Fort offers jaw-dropping views of the Konkan region and remains a treasured destination for history lovers, trekkers, and admirers of Maratha heritage.
Recently, Raigad Fort has been declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site by the Maharashtra State Government in July 2025.
